New Year's resolution brought me back to this page after a year and change.

I am currently writing at the Wyoming Tribune Eagle in Cheyenne as their general assignment reporter.

As you can see this space hasn't been used in sometime and the formatting is all off, but feel free to take a look at what was, at it's heart, a very fun time in my writing career.

Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band

HEY! Tonight Conor Oberst is in town at the Ogden! His new project is the Mystic Valley Band and it is quite delightful. Mixing the lyrics of Bright eyes with the easy feel of a Bob Dylan album and a dusty sun dried road, it is all i listened to during my last trip to the south west.

They are on tour for a few reasons, one of which is to promote a film called "One of A Kind", which documents the formation of the band. The movie is completlty free with the hope you donate to some charitys instead.

Pet of the Month is Paul Banker's newest EP.

In a world full of crazy synths and way to much information (Animal Collective ) and way to many tired singers (Bon Ivier) Pet of the Month treads that beautiful middle ground that The Postal Service once made so popular. The music is deep and filled with clicks and snaps that make you remember why headphones make everything sound so much better.

This should be the perfect bridge album for those winter spring months when its sunny but cold. Look for a myspace in the very near future.

Austin Lucas is a singer song writer most famous currently for touring with the Revival Tour (feat. Chuck Regan Tim Barry and that guy from Lucero). But what seperates Austin from the rest is his angelic singing voice that really carries a weight with it. He also knows a thing about that guitar around his neck.

If Chuck Regan thinking the best of him is not enough reason to hear him, i dont know what is.

He is on suburban home records and you really should have heard of him by now.

Mansions-EP

One part Bright Eyes and two parts fuzzed out rocker, Mansions is a DIY effort from Christopher Browder that brims with confidence and and sounds a lot like the 90s bands i grew up with. That is probably because the EP was produced by Mike Sapone (Taking back Sunday, Brand New and Straylight Run) and plays out like the best parts of the Get Up Kids.

Full album drops this fall and i know my expectations are high.

Albums you should already have heard

Portugal. The Man made an album called Censored Colors and it is fantastic. While previous efforts from this band were difficult for me to get into, this album had me hooked at go and held my interest through the length of the endeavor.

Their style is a hodgepodge of blues, indy and whatever else comes to their hands. But the best part is the puzzeling lyrics that, while difficult to dissect, fill the album out in ways not common to today's main stream music.

It was going to come out september and was leaked august. Thusly you should have it by now.

Some where between Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs got lost.

One of the best protest singers this country has ever seen, Ochs has influenced many of todays biggest stars (Kind of Like Spitting and Pearl Jam to name a few) but is relatively unknown by most people.

Simple guitars and words that really do show you how repetitive history can be make this the only artist I have been listing to these last few weeks. If his words dont get you thinking you surly are not paying attention to them.

Change the thought is run by local Denver artist Christopher Cox who works go in the same style as Shepard Fairey. And while the site does host some of his amazing material (including his wildly popular Obama posters) it also serves as a personal blog for him. He guides the readers to cool art works in the form of CD jackets, cloths and website design.

He makes some great posters and recently attended a swag DNC art show with performances from Ben Gibbard, both of which should be reason enough for you to swing by. If not i would have to say you are an uncultured swine.

The DNC has the town on the verge of martial law and the police are being dicks. KSNO wants to show our solidarity and may head down for Thursday, if we can find parking closer than the springs. Their name apparently comes from a photo by George Rodriguez which reads "it is better to live one day as a lion, than a thousand years as a lamb." Flip Flop-er

Here is the thing about modern politics. It is not really what your stances are so much as how many people you can confuse into voting for you. The more accusations you make the more likely they will stick regardless of the truth.

Accusations of flip-floping have be come highly popular for this purposes since Kerry got worked over last election. Now calling someone a flip floper is one of the most damaging/unhelpful/miss leading things you can do to get your self elected.

The worst part of this trend is the unwashed masses who perpetrate these myths. I believe these stories get momentum because A) they are easy to say over again and B) because it makes the person speaking sound like a hard boiled journalist that has the drop on everyone else.

Let me clear this up for you. Obama is not a flip floper. Obama is a member of the senate, which inherently means that you are going to vote for things you dont like. In addition to that you will also be asked to make deals with people you dont like. All of this coupled with his current attempts to move to the middle and refine his past positions makes him a smart politician, not a flip floper.

Think it through people. issues, not sound bites.

My Friend had free tickets to see Poison at the Greeley Stampede.

To which I said "the guy who makes smelly hookers fight over him? Hell yeah i am goin to go with you to that!"

It was pretty dam bad, but the crowd was very "interesting" so that was a plus. They played a couple covers and such and there was plenty of guitar and drum soloing for those who like hammerons. all in all it was about what i expected. Apparently this was the start of their world tour, which just made me ask....really?

Staring Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men) as our fearless leader, with Oliver Stone doing the direction. This Film is getting much hype, but as a reader to EW said in essence: I find I find Stone's movies to be highly entertaining if completely fictional, to which i could not agree more. I will probably wind up seeing it anyway.

I am more excited about Brolin's other film Milk. Directed by Gus Van Sant, Milk deals with the interesting and tragic story of Harvey Milk, California's first openly gay public official who was eventually assassinated.

Southern Comfort is thrown a free music festival in the Coors Field parking lot on June 28th. The show will Feature Gnarls Barkley, Blond Readhead and the Hot IQs among other acts. Couple cool magazines like Death And Taxes plus local record stores and food will be there.

Recently on the late night circuit playing that dance music that really has no place in the main stream but is hell of a lot of fun for suburban white kids like my self.

Its a decent album if completely nonsensical, and if you are having a party this is going to be the best thing to come out all summer. The beats are nice and very unique and I have to admit that this album was more fun for me then their other efforts. I would still rather listen to something with more substance but the patterns these guys came up with are great.

On tour with Kanye West this summer. I really want to go to that show actually....hmmmm....

Sounds like Elliott Smith but with a very Sonic Youth feel. His songs are simple and have a very low key feel. But his lyrics are just as interesting as anything in the main stream, and for the most part better.

Has a huge list of influences, and this is his third album apparently. If this is where his career is at currently i am excited to hear his future works.

Opened for Thrice the other night and I hated them live but it sounds so good on the record. This was the second time I have seen them and I still think the front man (Green) is on crack and sounds like a girl but the guitar parts are so beautiful....One of the more melodic bands of the last few years in my book.

They played warped last year and look to put a new album out in the fall.

Three places that are way cooler then Monolith:

1.Lollapaloza $190 Featuring:Rage against the Machine, Radiohead, Kanye West, Wilco, Black Keys and many many more.

Formerly the brunt of many jokes because of lackluster line ups and failed attempts to make it a moving tour, but getting radio head makes this the one to be at. The price is almost comparable to Monolith because there are no service charges. If you go out this year this is the one for variety, location and bang for your buck.

2.Bonnaroo $229 Featuring: MGMT, Battles, Chris Rock, !!!, M.I.A, The Fiery Furnaces, Two Gallants, Pearl Jam and many others.

Any festival that features B.B King, Death Cab for Cutie and Metalica has to be worth a look. Price is much higher (plus fees) then Monolith or Lolla and it is in the middle of nowhere, but the line up is dancy and also features some very cool stand up comics which looks to be the way of the future.

3.Sasquatch $154 Featuring: R.E.M, Modest Mouse, Cold War Kids, Flaming lips, Built to Spill, Flight of the Conchords

Most reasonably priced show, but also features some of the most unimaginative band selections. Most of these cats are playing other festivals and have been around the block already. I have to say i like the comedians they are bringing and i have heard good things about the venue. Course at this point it happens tomorrow so....hope you are on your way.

Looping is one of the hardest things you can do in the music world. It takes time, patience and an almost superhuman since of rhythm.

Far as i can tell David Ford has all those.

His music reminds me of D Rice (a comparison I'm sure he has heard many times) but his voice is a little more expressive to me, and for some reason it does not feel like every song is about the same chick.

His word play is fantastic and lines like "Another evening of sublime self-destruction/
To the tune of a thousand cigarettes" create a real interesting vibe that can play in everything from a smoky bar to a packed club.

Either way i think this cat will be getting a bunch of air play soon. Mean time watch a video of him at work and prepare to be amazed.

The Roots-Rising Down

The Roots straddle that line between common knowledge and underground. I guess what i am trying to say is that those who know them, know them and those that don't have no idea they exist.

With this new album i think that divide will grow smaller.

This album is full of dark beats and some crazy little synth action. Lyrically its harsh and touches on everything from crime to drop out rates. The words come fast and furious and it catches you off guard with how serious some of these topics are. Its a political album and from the first track you are well aware of that fact.

This one also features Common, Mos Def and Talib Kweli among others. And while its not a Club album, its one of the best hip hop has seen in a long time.

Narrow Stairs V. Plans V. Death Cab For Cutie as The new it Band that was Already an it Band

Death Cab is my obsession. I will admit it.

So please forgive this completely masterbatory act as i join the endless swarm of bloggers giving their opinion on the topic.

Lets start by saying that I liked Plans. It was the perfect introduction to their sound, it had all the down beat melancholy of We Have The Facts and all the rifts of Transatlanticism. There is not much more you can ask for when trying to expand your fan base while staying true to your roots. At the same time the album was pretty cut and dry, it lacked the mystery Ben had cultivated in past records. The fog had been replaced and Ben now sang with conviction on everything from the loss of loved ones to love after death. This coupled with the fact that the band was now all over Shows like the O.C turned off many a fan.

But i loved it, finally they got the respect they had earned. On top of that they had not lost their sound to the dreaded Major Label.

I got Narrow Stairs the morning of its release from my local record store and listened to it straight through two times.

I like it.

Granted there are parts that do not sound like DCFC to me. And there are songs I do not like. But once again they made the album they wanted to and once again they came up with something i will be listening to for many years to come. Best of all they got some of that mystery back that was so lacking in Plans. Its sonically expansive and just as lyrically interesting as any album i have heard in a long time. Its as if they said "hey O.C crowd, you like this sound? well here is the rest of stuff we play and if you don't like it get over it."

Haters will be heard, but im sure that Death Cab is the same band they always were. And from this point it looks like that's never going to change.

Thrice-Vol 3 & 4 of the Alchemy Index

Thrice is the Fugazi of our generation.

A band that is so distinct and so different from the rest of the music world that there is little one can do to describe them with out saying, "here...just listen."

Stepping further away from the main stream, Thrice released four separate EPs each dealing with a different element, and each trying to capture a specific feeling. The second release deals with Earth and Air.

Earth is my favorite of the two, but it is a far cry from the post hard core album Artist in the Ambulance, which catapulted Thrice into the public eye. On this Ep only one track (Come all you Weary) features a full drum kit. The rest of the EP is composed of rickety acoustic instruments. There is a folky feel to the album, but Teppei's always interesting guitar work keep it layered and complex. The lyrics on Earth definitely evoke comparisons to the solo work that Kensrue recently put out, but when the band comes in on the songs, you know its a Thrice production, with all the odd beats and delightful structuring that comes with it.

Air on the other hand is almost another take at Vheissu in some ways. The band comes together to form some very delicate and complex hooks, while still focusing on Kensrue's always interesting lyrics. Of all the EPs this one reaches its theme best, as most of the songs have a nice light feel. The first three tracks really impressed me, but the rest of the EP was a little sparse. I think that of all four EPs this one will appeal most to the more recent fans, especially those who loved "Red Sky" and "Of Dust and Nations."

Moral of the story is go buy this one if you are any kind of fan.

Greeley Estates-"Go West Young Man, Let The Evil Go East"

The often troubled band Greeley Estates will put their new album out on May 6th.

The band has been on constant tour for the last few years and has made several appearances on the warped tour. But they have yet to crack the main stream music world despite having a deep cult fallowing and some name recognition. I think this underground status will shift somewhat with the release of "Go West Young Man, Let the Evil Go East."

Their sound on this album has progressed past simple guitar hooks and falsetto screams into a more dirty almost chemical feel. The band now represents something closer to the Used rather then to their original screemo brothers My American Heart. It is an interesting take, and while certainly not the predominate style of American youths it is sure to have a fallowing, especially if the right groups get a hold of it.

But the album does not have a catchy single. The songs all have great potential but the lack strong choruses will hurt them in the long run. To make it big in todays music industry I really believe you need a catchy phrase or hook, and while Estates is a talented band, they do not have that anywhere on this album.

Despite this they are ready to play yet another stent on the Warped Tour and hopefully make it big this summer. Catch them when it comes to your town.

New viral campaign for the upcoming Dark Knight film features some pretty cool stuff including free t-shirts, stickers and even rallies for the the campaign of Harvey Dent. For those of you who are not uber nerds like me, Harvey Dent is a the DA for Gotham City and close friend of Batman, but when a criminal disfigures one side of his face he becomes the criminal master mind Two-Face.

Not necessarily insider knowledge but its really cool how the production company and writers are going about creating this prequel material and selling it to the public. It really makes me happy to see this much detail and preparation going into the film. And with the addition of Dent i can reasonably assume that Two-Face will play a major roll in the upcoming films.

"Scooter" Libby got disbarred the other day which made me really happy. After the rage I felt with his sentence being commuted I wasn't sure how I would handle him walking away again. He was disbarred for moral turpitude, which is something I'm sure everyone in that administration could be hit with...

John McCain, every ones favorite "elder statesman" finally sealed the deal with the devil by doing a complete 180 and supporting Jerry Falwell, the same man he denounced as "an agent of intolerance" in his 2000 campaign. Looks like he realized that the only group still willing to vote for a republican candidate is the christian right. Got to at least act the part I guess...

In addition to begging the extreme right for votes, McCain also found time to do some straight talk about economics (though he admits he is unqualified in this area). In a lengthy speech McCain told those on the verge of bankruptcy to suck it up because the goverment is not going to help you.

“It is not the duty of government to bail out and reward those who act irresponsibly, whether they are big banks or small borrowers” McCain said.

This comes on the heals of rising food and gas prices and a nation so in debt it cant even breath. Im sure it was all their fault though... guess only the strong (read as Corporate) will survive in America.

The Odd Couple- Gnarls makes a new one

Let me preface this review by saying that I think Danger Mouse can do no wrong. The man has been a genius on everything from Demon Days to the Grey Album. There is not much in the main stream industry that can compete with the full power and style of his beats.

That being said, this album will not be known for one song, as in St. Elsewhere. There is no overly catchy tune that dominates the album, no one song that will sore the charts. What there is instead is multi layered songs full of great beats and amazing vocalizations that take you back to a funky and fun time.

Gnarls's strength to me has always come from their great talent with the visual aspects and a solid approach to making songs. That is to say that every song on the album works and feels polished, there is little on the album that I am disappointed in and I think, that for a sophomore album, this is a tremendous work. I can not wait to see some of the videos they came up with and I hope to catch a show from them sometime soon.

He was in a band called All-Time Quarterback, and then in a band called Death Cab For Cutie.

DCFC put an album out called "Something about Airplanes." As I understand it, this two song EP came between that album and "We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes." There are only 500 hand numbered copies in the world right now, and it is a very elusive EP to get information on.

The music is tender and has that mystery that I think is lacking from the new Death Cab stuff. You can definitely hear the traces of All-Time QB and the roots for the Postal Service in these songs. And while i would never put this into the top stuff for DCFC, it is very cool to hear some more of their older stuff.

File this with the other great EPs this band concistantly puts out.

The Lone Ranger rides again

I have been upset with the political events of the last few months. My favorite candidates have been dropping like flies and it looked like ill have to pick between two candidates that do not truly represent my beliefs.

But then a very unreasonable man and personal hero of mine chose to step up and make sure that we do not have a coronation but instead have a real debate and race on issues that are being talked about one dimensionally. Nader is in, and the Lone Ranger, as he was once called, rides again.

Predictably the Democrats both came out and said he will hurt their chances of winning. To quote a band frequently feature on this site..."odd how people shake...."

Undoubtedly in the next few weeks we will here much talk of Nader giving the election to Bush, and how his entrance is an attempt by a senile old man to gain back ground. He will be portrayed as old, crotchety and stuck in his ideas. No mention of his deeds as a consumer advocate. No mention of his strong convictions and unflinching principles and no mention of how Kerry ran a shitty campaign and blamed Nader for it. No mention of the DNC black balling him by keeping him out of debates and hopefully out of the public eye. And no mention that if the Democrats don't win on a landslide this year...they have only themselves to blame.

Think about this when casting your votes:

The democrats continue to be a watered down version of the republicans. Nader is the way to a third party, also known as real change. He has a "with us or against us" attitude because the two majors are against him and all he stands for. If he should win, the power system both parties have spent time setting up with corporate America will go down the drain.

As it stands Gravel is the only candidate (To my knowledge) that has come out in full support of this bill, and made it key stone issue. Much love for that and lets hope the big two catch on.

Bayside is a band in the wrong generation.

That's not really their fault but it is a sad thing. Currently my very general age group is feeling the Kanye West/Fall Out Boy sound which...is nothing like Bayside. But if they had come along when bands like Alkeline Trio, Jawbreaker, Blink 182 and Get Up Kids ruled they would already be the new in band. They would be on world tours, and major labels. They would have massive followings of overly devoted fans.

Instead they are on one of the weaker labels (Victory) and labor under relative anonimity. Their new CD "The Walking Wounded" is selling but it is no Billboard 100. What they do have though, is a very devoted fallowing. A cult in fact.

When I saw them play at the Aggie last week I realized why the fan base refer to themselves as a cult. Its because once you see the band and experience the feeling at the show, a bond with everyone there is formed forever. Their live set is amazing and the energy in the room was fanatical. Everyone knew the words and everyone was singing along. It was a no frills punk rock set that left a strong impressing in me and my friend.

It has been a long time since I walked out of a show with a smile...that night made me remember what drew me to the post punk scene in the fist place.

Currently Bayside is on tour with Straylight Run and they will be hitting a town near you. Also word on the street has it that a new album from them will be out this summer.

I'm a fan boy.

For kids who care about lyrics and DIY ethics, there is no band more influential and interesting then Jawbreaker. They paved the way for today's bands in more ways then I care to list and as Jessey Lacey said once:

While they are not together their albums are still some of the most unique and relevant and Dear You is one of my all time favorites. If you don't know the material, drop what you are doing and go buy an LP.

I was more then a little happy when I heard that Edwards had edged out Hillary. It gave me some validation and suddenly this is the three way race the Clinton camp wanted to avoid.

By my count Hillary is in a world of hurt. She has made far more money then any other candidate (from either party) and has far more political support (her husband is doing more then any former president has ever done) and she still managed to finish in the rear.

I know Iowa wasn't a good state for her to start with but If Obama can clean up, there is no reason she should finish almost out of the money like that.

Anyways, I think my boy Edwards still has a good chance, far more democrats came out to vote and Obama made history, so it was a good day all around.

kimya dawson's music is the soul of "Juno"

Just got back from a screening of Juno and I was quite pleased to hear Kimya Dawson's music as the soundtrack to the film.

Her soft anti folk was a delightful accompaniment to the movie, and the fact that she recently had a babe only added to my enjoyment. Going in I was afraid they only used her song for the trailer, but a good 5-6 songs are featured in various states.

Aside from the music, I thought the film was brilliantly acted and had a great script. I was genuinely touched at the end of the film and glad that I did not know to much going in. The direction was nothing to write home about but I was thoroughly entertained and I feel like this movie will compete for attention come award season.

Yes, it is time for everyone and their mom to list a top something or other and then pass a free song out for it. But we don't do that here at KSNO, instead we make random lists in our spare time and give nothing away.

So here are top things that are not lists but did happen in 2007 and could be considered awards.

Top album by a band that broke up this year!

The Blood Brothers-"Young Matches": One of the more talked about albums of by bands no one can define, the BB called it quits this year and this is apparently their final will and testament. I still like "Burn piano island, Burn" but hey, whatever.

Most talked about album that was really not as good as the one before!

Fall Out Boy-Infinity on High: Yeah, its cool you guys worked with Jay-Z and its neat that you save children in your videos, but honestly did you need that back half of the album? Patrick can't sing (it works though, just not when he is solo on a piano).

Album only bloggers and parents of band members loved!

Elvis Perkins-Ash Wednesday: Hey. Listen champ. Its hard for singer song writers to make it in this hip hop world. And you got some great reviews from Rolling Stone and the like, but you are moody as hell. And there can only be so many Ryan Adams-es in the world, go join Jason Collet and Matt Nathanson in the corner.

Dane Cook- Rough Around the Edges

Dane Cook's new one isn't great.

Hell i didn't think Vicious Circle was that amazing. But for some reason people love him, like....really love this guy; so i keep coming back hoping for more.

Let me start this review by stating my philosophy on Mr. Cook:

"Dane Cook is good for quoting, and not much else."

That said, Rough Around the Edges was recorded in Madison Square Garden in front of what sounds like a billion 14 year old girls and guys who still hi-five. Dane does all new material as far as i can tell, but if you have heard him once you can hear him again. His act continues to center around "you know when situations" with added sound effects and, I'm sure, facial expressions. It is great escapist material, which given the current political condition, is probably why he is thriving.

The jokes are fine, and its good for a little chuckle, but honestly there is better stand up out there today. Go buy Jim Gaffigan's new one or look into Daniel Tosh, both are smarter and have a little more re-listen value.

David Bazan at the Hi-Dive 15/5/07

As you may have heard from many many blogs better then mine, former Pedro the Lion front man David Bazan is on tour across America with J. Tillman and they managed to stop by every ones favorite dive for a show.

I don't want to waste peoples time with repeating what other blogs have said before me, so I will keep this short and point you to those two blogs for songs and added info.

J.Tillman was a great surprise for me. He had a very bluesy sounds and was one of the more entering stage presences i have seen in quite some time. Playing for just under an hour he sang some really moving stuff and while it got a bit repetitive i thought he had strong showing in front of a pretty disinterested crowd. File him under:Singer/song writer, Elliott Smith, Blues and great stage banter.

The Denver show for Bazan was an hour long and it featured essentially the same play list that has been floating around the Internet since the start of this tour. The majority of the songs with Bazan's own works but he still fit in some great Pedro stuff which was very cool for me. He was a very interesting performer, and when he spoke between songs I could tell that he was very smart and at the same time very uncomfortable. For my money, there are very few artist that mean every word they sing and have a personal connection to every line, and David is one of them.

Bazan mentioned to me that he enjoyed touring with Ben Gibbard and would probably record again with him some time soon. He also said that he would be back through here in the summer time hopefully with a full band, most likely called David Bazan's Black Cloud. Ill keep a look out.

Can't get enough of this album recently.

The lyrics are Witty, and the beats are slightly off tune, but it is some of the smartest music I have heard in a long time. It sounds like Against Me! in some ways, but it is far darker and much less politically motivated.

They will be in town December 28th at some random person's house and i will probably be there.

Say Anything- In defense of the Genre

It has been a few weeks since the album dropped and i am ready to make my official post.

Let us begin.

Say Anything rocks. If you don't know this by now, you are missing out on some of the best rock material of the last couple years. In a decade where lyrics take a back seat to beats, Say Anything continually put out some of the best content out there (both lyrically and sonically), and on In Defense of the Genre they go large with a double disc for their sophomore major label release.

The album is expansive and covers a lot of ground. The band is still playing with some great rock stuff but they also manage to throw some curve balls with mandolins and voice overs. All the while Max sings about his drug and girl problems, but where ...Is a real boy feels manic (and rightly so due to the conditions at recording) Genre is contemplative and for the most part...far deeper. It sounds complicated, but at the heart of it all is classic rock hooks and fans should not be disappointed.

The album also features some great guest performances from the likes of Pete Yorn, Adam Lazzara from TBS, Haley from Paramore, Chris Carrabba from Dashboard, Anthony Raneri from Bayside and Chris Conley from Saves the days to name a few.

What I like about these guest appearances is how low key they are. The appearances are not listed and are quite subtle. Max is the focus of all the songs and I get the feeling that these were done as a favor to the band. In the end they become a fun Easter egg hunt and a nice addition to a very solid album.

If you know and love the band this album will rock for you.

If you are new to the band, I'm sure you will like it. But I recommend you start with is a real boy and work your way into this one as it could be overwhelming.

The NYT is running a story about presidential front runner Rudy Giuliani messing with statistics during his recent campaign stops.

The article indicates that Guliani has played with a wide range of statistics, including government spending and crime rates during his terms in new york.

For a guy already walking a fine line between over hyping his only "highlight" (9/11) and trying hard to please every conservative group he can think of and has dissed in the past (NRA). This could not have come at a worse time.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while guys but it has been a hard couple of weeks school wise.

Anyways I don't think there is much to write on anyways so ill just tell you about some posts coming soon.

Dec. 5th i will be seeing former Pedro the Lion front man David Bazan at the hi-dive and i will probably post on that.

Dec. 11th the Cold War Kids will be in boulder and I may head out for that.

Currently I have been listening to a lot of Andrew Jackson Jihad and they just recently got their new CD reviewed by AP. Great band in the vein of Against Me! and they should be rolling through here in late December. They have a few tracks for DL through that link.

Zookeeper's new one has caught my eye as well but not in the same way. Sounds like Bright eyes and The Good Life, though AP didn't like it at all.

I may do a few best of lists if the mood suits me, but for the most part i feel like everyone does that and its quite dull. Ill play that by ear.

Lastly i am going to do a nice sized "Thursdays are for old friends on Modest Mouse's Good News For People Who Love Bad news" in the coming weeks. It is one of my all time favorite albums so i plan on putting some time into it.

Brand new let this B side out recently and i have waited to post it because they decided to sell this one and i hate to cut in on their money flow.

Basically nine songs/demos leaked well before "Devil and God"was planned to drop. Jesse was apparently furious about this and instead of releasing the album, scraped most of the songs or re did them completely (see Luca reprise). Uber cool kids like my self have held on to these demos and prayed they would revisit them.

Recently our prayers were answered with "Fork and Knife". This song has a haunting drum beat with catchy lyrics and I am thrilled it finally made its way out into the light. Though it has some great lyrics im not really sure how this would have fit with DaG any ways. Ill take it as a B side, and Hope he gives the others the same treatment.

NOFX did another live album! Sticking with the long tradition of ironic album titles it's called "They've actually gotten worse live" which is almost as funny as "So long! And thanks for all the shoes."

Far as I can tell the CD is composed mostly of rarities and stuff that wasn't on the other live album. From the cursory listen it sounds like they even changed the tempos and lyrics to some of the songs. Very cool stuff, i highly recommend you go get this one.

But if you are to cheep I'm going to put up my bootleg copy of a show they did a couple summers ago. It's live in Fitchburg Mass, and has kept me laughing for a while.

Thursdays are for finding old friends: All-time Quarterback

All-Time QB was a side project for Ben Gibbard that met a rather untimely end. Unlike its cousin "The Postal Service" QB was never fully released and did not have the cool band mates to help it survive.

The songs are similar to other Gibbard productions and have that familiar haunting lyrical content we have all come to know and love. The only down side is they are mostly weirdly produced and often feel like a better forgotten B-Side.

Still, there are gems in these recordings. "Plans get complex" is fun and a great precursor to other Gibbard material and if you are a fan I'm sure it will all be interesting to you.

Interestingly enough, Ben was heckled to play "Soc Hop" in a recent solo live show, to which he kind of laughed and declined. Lucky for you dear readers I have a rare occasion where Ben did play an All time song live. I believe I got it from Hard to find a friend back in the day as part of an original live set in the state of Washington.

"Cloudy and sunny at the same time?

The National Weather Service reports that the extreme haze over the metro area today is not from clouds but is smoke from the fires in Southern California that has drifted our way.

The haze wasn't enough to dim the sun, but it was enough to obscure views of the mountains, even of some distant buildings.

According to satellite images from the Boulder-based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, smoke from the fires has been carried by southwest winds as far east as Wichita and as far north as Boise, Idaho.

"There's a big, high-pressure system over us, which is stable and stagnant, allowing the smoke to hang around here," said Weather Service meteorologist Jim Kalina. "The fires are only about 60 percent contained, so this could stay with us for several days."

Forecasts for later in the week call for winds out of the north, which could blow much of the smoke away.

Temperatures from the high-pressure system will remain in the 70s into Wednesday. Colder weather with some moisture is predicted for the end of the week. "

The show was fantastic.

Really that is all i need to say but i suppose you will be wanting a little more. So lets skip Mewithoutyou and head straight to everyone favorite post punk art rockers, Thrice.

Thrice came to the stage and lead off with two new songs from their Element themed EPs which only fulled an already frenzied crowd. The stage banter was low and their set list featured a lot of Vheissu but also mixed in some of the stuff from Artist in the Ambulance. They played for an hour and change and Jessie Lacey came out and watched from his balcony. It was great and if you get a chance go stream their new album/EP deal its quite good.

Brand New came on and killed. They started the night with "You wont Know" and did no stage banter. It was an interesting set that did nothing from Your Favorite weapon and a hand full from Deja. There was however a whole bunch of Devil and God and for the first time in a while Jessie seemed borderline comfortable up there. They played for about an hour and half and were sporting two drummers, which was a bit different.

The most interesting moment came during the encore, where instead of playing a few more songs The band slowly came out one by one and proceeded to jam for about 10 minuets. Then they drew feedback and then finally cut the power.

Startling and different.

Said it before and it needs to be said again, you must see Brand New once before you reach 25.

Well that was short lived and highly anti climactic. Sure is going to suck having to pay extra to see the Rockies mediocer team next year. I was willing to jump the the band wagon as my Giants had long been out of it, but honestly what were they expecting? The Assassination of Jesse James has to be one of the best westerns of the past 10 years and it claims this title by forsaking many of the traditional western staples. The film is low on gun fights, beautiful women and daring escapes...what it has a lot of is haunting images, brilliant acting and an expansive script.

Do not be scared off by tales of over length or dull plot. Those are comments by people to shallow to understand the true depth of the film and what it was trying to accomplish. Yes it is expansive and yes it could be a little shorter, but oh how i did enjoy every minuet of it and in the end it was all quite nessicary to the pacing and story as a whole.

Pitt throws in his best performance since Fight Club. Every time he enters a shot I felt the tension in the scene grow exponentially. Not since Depp's performance in "The Libertine" have I seen an actor loom across a film with so little effort.

If you can controll your ADD and feel up to watching a film that will challenge you go see this as soon as possible.

Ok, do your self a favor. Stop reading my blog, get a newspaper, locate the nearest theater and go see "Across the Universe."

This was a pretty fantastic film and the more I think about it the more things I find to love about it. While the soundtrack will most assuredly get all the attention there is far more to this film then a simple "its a musical with Beatles songs" description can do for it.

First of all this is a fans movie. There are many small references to the Beatles career through out the film, some of which are merly in passing and others are key points of the film. If you are not a pretty in depth fan you may miss some of these but I suppose that is part of the fun.

The other thing that really struck me about this film was the excellent script. It takes a lot of talent to write a fully multi character story around 20 or so Beatles songs. Think about that....these songs were written over about a 10 year period and go from poppy love songs ("I want to hold your hand") to rocking anthems ("Revolution") and cover just about every hit they ever did in between. Just considering the diversity of the tracks it is quite a feat, but when you think about the afore mentioned details and references thrown in for good measure the script becomes all the more lovable.

The acting was fine and hearing the songs sung by other voices was a little disconcerting at first but I still found my self singing along. If you count your self as any sort of fan I highly recommend you head out and see this bad boy.

In more national news, Radioheads album dropped. I would write about it/give you a song, but im sure you know what the whole deal is. So far i like it.

Also, the Colorado "rookies" as i called them in years past have some how managed to get within 3 wins of the world series.

Wtf is right!

Lastly former VP Al Gore won the Peace Prize and still dosen't look like he will run. To bad about that but still a hearty congrats from us here at KSNO.
