Best blog post of the year so Far....

Go read this right now, The Torture Garden is one of the best blogs out there and about the Fourth Post Down is why. Great song cover, great picture, great words.

Here is the text re-created.

A beautiful song is not of this world - it is a different thing to your bank statement, your exam results, or the guarantee on your laptop. It is nothing to the price of a full tank, the important things you worry about, the bullet points that fill you up and drag you around on your day. It does nothing for troop movements, diplomacy or sanctions, it doesn't get anyone elected, it doesn't pay your bills, it doesn't contribute to the economy. In fact, it is against this, it is opposed to daily routine, cubicles and uniforms, punching in and punching out.

It disrupts all these serious things, the things that our society seems to be built on, and it points out details like a smiling white angel on your shoulder. You work so you can play again, and there's no point otherwise. You work so you can laugh, be loved, fall in love, make jokes and get happy under bedroom lights, and we love to be reminded of this, we need to be reminded of this, even forcibly. A good song is a terrorist attack on behalf of beauty.Indie kids of the world! Unite in twos please, this is your wedding song.

Songs for when you get your fingers caught in the fan

I caught my fingers in the fan twice... that's right...twice...

I graduate from college soon and I'm now worried for my survival.

Here is a list of songs I was listening to at the time of the incidents.

Really they have no reason to be on a play list together, but go with it for me.

True Stories I Made Up

So I am a little late on the Daniel Tosh band waggon, I mean I had heard him a while ago, but its taken me some time to actually go out and get his album. And since It hit my computer its been on constant repeat. Like no joke, I can't stop hearing it.

For those of you not in the know, Tosh does a great combination of personal opinion/observation that ultimately winds up with a Non-sequitur.

Its very funny to hear and if you are not paying attention its easy to get lost, hell even if you are paying attention its easy to get lost. He is probablly one of the better voices I have heard recently.

Think of him as a more talented Dane Cook, and take a listen to these tracks.

So ok, sorry

So I moved back up to Greeley this week, and I just got my Internet running tonight. Hence the lack of posting.

I hope the cold turkey spell did not damage any of you and that you will all still be frequent guests of the site.

Rather then do a real post here I'm going to give you a run down and then post when I can this weekend.

Firstly I saw Super Bad and it was pretty dam good, all my friends liked it and it was pretty well put together. I still say that knocked up or the other classic Frat Pack films are better but as of right now this one is pretty high up there.

Secondly I Guess im Floating has a pretty great cover post that includes the Foo Fighters doing Arcade Fire and The Arctic Monkeys doing The Strokes. Head over there for some great gems.

Lastly, I identify with this guy a lot. Recently I have been thinking about how cool a life he lead and wishing i could get that kind of respect.

OK real posts are coming soon.

Medicare in america = shit

A new set of rules for Medicare was put out by the Bush administration which now says that you can not get coverage for "a condition that could reasonably have been prevented." This means that if you got a post op-infection from a doctor leaving a sponge in you...your not going to get covered.

As dumb as that sounds other conditions like bedsores and even simple falls could be taken out of the coverage plan.

Apparently this new plan will save Medicare about $20 million a year, and is supposed to force hospitals to take better care of their patients instead of expecting the government to foot the bill when mistakes are made.

Only problem with that is the patient is now pretty much left to fend for themselves when it comes to malpractice costs. Which sucks.

While I have to say I like where their head is at for the most part, I would love for this statement to come with an attachment that says, "We are finding ways to save money because of a very expensive war that has no end in sight." I think that little note would help us understand where this is coming from.

For now, make sure you stay healthy. Oh...and don't fall...

Thursdays are for old friends: Mos Def

So, I am not a big Hip-hop guy but I do try to get a listen in from time to time, and while Mos Def isnt anywhere near being new to the scene he has come up on radar for a few reasons.

#1 being his previous roll in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (which was very underrated) and now his newst roll staring across from Jack Black in "Be Kind, Rewind", which is the new Michel Gondry joint due out this winter. The movie looks fantastic and if the trailer is an indication I would say this is going to be the 4th straight Gondry film I'm going to buy.

But aside from his interesting acting career he is also one of the coolest voices in hip-hop. And he is also very socially conscious, which is something new these days.

The one and only album I have by him is "True Magic" which is a hefty record.

Wikipedia tells me he worked with members of The Neptunes on it and I have to say it is quite fun to listen to. My favorite track off the album is "Dollar Day" which is about the destruction and hypocrisy that fallowed after hurricane Katrina. The beat is fun, and the lyrics are biting at times. He even disses U2 and Bono!

Its a keeper of an album. Take a few tracks and go see "Be Kind, Rewind."

ohh....oh....I know this one! Call on me! Is it, lame pop Icons from past years?

So I knew about this story 3 days ago, and My old Kentucky blog has it already. But I still think this story about 50 cent giving up on life if he is out sold by Kanye west is one of the funniest things i have ever heard.

I'm going to say here that Kanye will out sell him handily as Kanye actually....you know...has skill.

Then again I thought The Giants would win the world series, Bush would be out of office by now and the Music business would have allowed free down loads. So I guess im not the one to ask.

In other news sub media tv posted a great video the other day and is still a regular stop for those who want their information: hot, cheeky and full of bad words.

Lastly Josh Howie has been making me laugh quite a bit. Someone introduced me to him as an English Woody Allen and so far i have to agree.

Bush War adviser says draft worth a look

APWASHINGTON — Frequent tours for U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan have stressed the all-volunteer force and made it worth considering a return to a military draft, President Bush's new war adviser said Friday.

"I think it makes sense to certainly consider it," Army Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute said in an interview with National Public Radio's "All Things Considered.""And I can tell you, this has always been an option on the table. But ultimately, this is a policy matter between meeting the demands for the nation's security by one means or another," Lute added in his first interview since he was confirmed by the Senate in June.

President Nixon abolished the draft in 1973. Restoring it, Lute said, would be a "major policy shift" and Bush has made it clear that he doesn't think it's necessary.

"The president's position is that the all volunteer military meets the needs of the country and there is no discussion of a draft. General Lute made that point as well," National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.

In the interview, Lute also said that "Today, the current means of the all-volunteer force is serving us exceptionally well."Still, he said the repeated deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan affect not only the troops but their families, who can influence whether a service member decides to stay in the military.

"There's both a personal dimension of this, where this kind of stress plays out across dinner tables and in living room conversations within these families," he said. "And ultimately, the health of the all-volunteer force is going to rest on those sorts of personal family decisions."

The military conducted a draft during the Civil War and both world wars and between 1948 and 1973. The Selective Service System, re-established in 1980, maintains a registry of 18-year-old men.Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., has called for reinstating the draft as a way to end the Iraq war.

Bush picked Lute in mid-May as a deputy national security adviser with responsibility for ensuring efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan are coordinated with policymakers in Washington. Lute, an active-duty general, was chosen after several retired generals turned down the job.

I think you guys know where I stand on all of this.

Back to music posting tomorrow.

Captain Ahab

So I saw the weirdest show ever yesterday.

Scratch that.

I witnessed one of the most danceable, confusing, homoerotic, misogynistic, enjoyable shows of the last few months.

Going in, I had no idea what Captain Ahab would sound like. It was just a name on the bill to yet another show me and Luke were headed to.
Going out, I was thrilled and puzzled.

For those not in the know, Captain Ahab is a two piece band from L.A. Basically one guy dose the singing and the other member's only job is to dance around the stage and get really really sweaty. I learned more from their web site.

Los Angeles-based electronic dance group Captain Ahab mans the harpoon in a
mutiny against the harsh tyranny of electronic genres and traditional dance
music. With Jonathan Snipes on computer and vocals aided by the
take-off-your-pants dance action of the ever-virile Jim Merson, the Captain
realizes the climax of high-energy punk with their live shows stirring the
most obstinate sperm (whale) from the depths below.

The live show consisted of some highly danceable beats and some of the funniest lyrics I have heard in a very long time. Then again it also displayed some very sweaty shirtless men. Quite the show.

Check them out if you are down for something you litteraly have never heard or seen before.

"3oh!3"

I whent to the Hi-Dive again with Luke the other night and though the show was so so local Denver act "3oh!3" really caught my eye and had Luke scrambeling for the CD after the set. When I describe it as two very hip/indy white dudes doin a crunk rap set it sounds a bit odd.

But thats leaving out the great stage presence and their inate ability to play off the streo types that are all over the hip-hop world. Probably the best example of this came during the live set when both members began to dance in unicen and wander out into the crowd. It was quite fun to dance to and I have been spinning the CD the whole day.

The beats were fresh and it was a great time, at first i thought they were doing covers but apparently they do it all in house. These guys are going to be playing Monolith soon and it looks like they have a slue of shows all over Colorado, includeing one spot opening for Snoop Dogg.

Sick

Buy their new one, which you can "spit on" lol

Bishop Allen at the High-Dive

The pictures I took last night weren't so hot so I just lifted this one from a well known blog. Shh...dont tell them.

Anyways Page France came along for this show and I have to say I was less then impressed with the performance. Maybe its just me but when your music is that simple playing longer then 30 minuets can get a bit old. After a while it was the same thing and even Luke was a little disappointed in the show. I mean, it was alright....just not something I would actively seek out again.

But that's ok, because Bishop Allen was on next and they were quite good live. I would even go so far as to say one of the most joy full shows I have ever been witness to. Each member of the band looked as if they were having a great time and the set was nicely planed including the obvious picks like "Click Click Click" and the more subtle EP-titles from their year long EP project.

For some reason their stage presence and happy banter reminded me of a young Paul and John, but that could just have been me reaching. Any how I managed to score the set list and a few signature and bought both their albums. Quite a good night on the whole. Even better news came when they mentioned they were going to be on tour with John Vanderslice in October right around my birthday.

Guess I know where ill be.

I imagine Luke will be posting about this show him self soon so keep an eye out for that.

whats that you say? A new album for the Good Life?

Music for kids is reporting that there will be a new Good Life album out September 11 and even has two new tracks for your sampling.

For those of you not in the know, the Good Life is the side project for the often underrated Tim Kashner of Cursive and produces some of the coolest and most accessible songs on Saddle Creek.

Here, take an acoustic version of one of their songs and go get the new ones.

Thursdays are for Finding old Friends: Built to Spill

Built to Spill is one of those bands that all your favorite bands like to site as their favorite band. The likes of Issac Brock and Ben Gibbard list the band as a major influence and in fact I would say the whole Midwest/Northwest scene looks to BTS in one way or another.

Their sound is always coherent, but often times it wanders. I know that doesn't really make sense to you, but if you can picture a man walking though the woods with no real direction but at the same time walking with purpose and meaning you begin to get the drift.

Or maybe you don't

The first album I heard from them was "Keep it Like a Secret" and it is still one of my favorite albums. It becomes jammy in some parts and there are a few songs I regularly skip, but for the most part it is still one of the most easy to listen to albums ever. The guitars are fun but i really think you can see the influence in the vox and it's delivery. If you like Phish, Death Cab For Cutie, Brand New or mostly anything on Sub Pop I would take a listen.

More songs from newer records
