The End of the Early November

The Early November will play their last show at the Bamboozle this summer and call it quits.

I'm not up on all the reasons, but the low sales of their triple disk and band dynamics that were shaky going into the making of that album probably contributed.

Here is an excerpt from their letter:
"...as for what lies ahead for us... most of us will go back to the life we've never really had before. we'll go on to get regular jobs and see what else is out there. it's exciting, awkward, and scary all at the same time but that's life. As far as music goes... we'll always do our own thing. Ace started his own record label (Regular Music) and has some really great releases coming out that i'm looking forward to. I started another band (Grace Period) and i'm going to hit the studio in may with that..."

I was lucky enough to see these guys at warped tour and I was pretty impressed. It is sad to see them go, but I am pretty sure that these members wont stay gone for long. Ill keep a weathered eye out and you will be the first people I tell.

Mean time, they are going to put their remaining merch on sale for their last show and apparently everything must go. If you are going...get a shirt...If not...get these songs...

Thursdays are for Finding old Friends

If you read this blog a lot you may know I have a bit of an obsession problem with Green Day. And by a bit I mean, I actively seek out tracks that are hard to find in a very complusive manner. Today I open the vault and pull out "1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours" which I consider their first release ever, but Wiki tells me is really just a compilation of their first EPs (nit picky but ill go with it).

This is a treasure of an album, each track features that old school Lookout! records feel and it really takes me back to my summers in California.

Billy Joe's voice is still young and it is quite interesting to compare it to some of his more recent works. You still have that snarl these days but back then I feel like he really ment it. In fact i think the same can be said for the entire band. But i guess its hard to snarl when you are middle aged and selling out the Pepsi Center.

This is a classic, but its rarity has diminished since a few copys got out on the Internet. Don't worry though, my stuff is from the real deal. One of the perks of living in Northern California in the 90's.

Box car Racer. Or the story of the other blink side project

Haven't posted in a loooooong time so I'm going to throw this one out there and promise that Thursday will be a really fun throw back. OK?

Box Car Racer was the original side project that told us all the end may be near for our beloved blink. Either way, I tend to like this album more then the other spin offs, it reminds me of a darker racy-er Blink and I like that in a band.

Tom said that their influences come from Fugazi and other post punk giants and I can totally feel that. Travis is perfect on the drums per the usual and guest appearances from Tim Armstrong make this a pretty dam good album. While it is only 12 tracks long it does give you a feeling of what Tom could do on his own, if he wasn't hindered by that voice of his....

But alas this was to be the only one they would ever do, with Tom stating that the band had served its purpose and he was putting it into hiatus. It was long after that, around 3 years, when we started to see blink fall apart.

If you like blink, rites of spring or the dark side of pop punk hit these tunes up.

Top 5 bands that are "Cool" live

I have seen many bands that have a undeniable sense of cool around them. That something that makes it nearly impossible to take your eyes off them when they are on the stage. In a very forgettable blog entry for most I will now list my top 5 and you will check your bookmarks for a much more interesting page. But its going to be fun for me, so i don't care.

5.The Cold War Kids-Watched them light up the Larimer Lounge while on tour with Tapes 'n Tapes. I feel like I haven't seen a band that energetic and fun in a long time. I walked out of there wanting more and feeling very re-assured that blues was still alive.
Robbers(live).mp3

4.The Kings of Leon-Caught their show right as Shake-Heartbreak was getting some air play and it was nuts. The highlight of the show was the conclusion of the main set, when Caleb hit his last note and bitch slaped the mic to the stage showering picks into the air....sooooo bad ass.
The Bucket.mp3

3.Greenday-Granted It was at the Pepsi center (not the most punk venue) but it was still a very rockin set. The crowd was into it and the bad ass factor was high as Billy Joe screamed "you parents picked the wrong F*)Ckin night to bring your kids to the show! ITS ALL COMING the F&(&C DOWN!" man that rocked....plus, I knew then that me and him could be best friends.
My Generation (The Who).mp3

2.The Strokes- The band that literally defined cool for me. Seeing them was the culmination of my high school obsession which reached unhealthy heights. Casablancas was completely wasted and yet it didn't matter, it only added to my experience. And they played a Ramones cover, talk about heaven on earth.
12:51.mp3

1.Interpol-Dear god,
Thank you for making one of my first shows this good. I don't know if it was the lights or the stage presence, but either way I can still recount every second of that show. From Paul sticking his cigarette into his guitar strings between songs, to Carlos D's outlandish uniform and antics. The picture at the top doesn't do it justice, you just have to go to one of their shows to bask in their glory.

Elliott Smith

Elliott Smith was one of the biggest influences on my life and it looks like he is going to get one more CD in the the form of New Moon. Many of the tracks on this album are available in live and demo formats but this CD will give us clean produced cuts...finally.

While I am Fuel, you are friends gave me the first details, she also pointed me to this site which gives a great break down of what is on it and what is not.

If you are interested in getting other versions of these songs head over to the Trash Treasury and make friends, because those are still some of the nicest and most informed kids on the net.

The Axe That Chopped The Cheery Tree

The Axe That Chopped the Cherry Tree is a phenomenon to my campus. I go to a school that is located on the final frontier of the west and is not all the great for finding the music that could be considered cutting edge. Despite this, The Axe happened and for one reason or another it clicked with what little scene we had here.

I was first drawn to them because of the art work , which is like nothing else I have ever seen. But what kept me around was the power and skill that guys this young should not posses. The granted comparisons between UnderOath, Fear Before and Mars Volta all come to mind, but in some ways that is not the best way to go about describing them. I think you can only label them as the next wave...a grand evolution from the path the Blood Brothers laid down.

Big shoes for a band that definitely fits adjectives like "young" "fresh" but when your young anything can happen.

Currently they are hitting the road non stop and hoping someone takes notice. I hope they do because it is a rare site to see band that is out there for the music and not the friend count. if they succeed I will be quite impressed and excited for them.

If you are in the zip code come up and see them at the beetle this Saturday. Beats the hell out of suck ass bands like Set Forth, which is apparently the only band worthy of play on this campus according to our programing council.

God i got to get out of here....

Heavens

Heavens is the Matt Skiba's voice (lead singer for The Alkaline Trio and Josiah Steinbrick's beats. The effect is something similar to Interpol and Joy Division. Something that is quite pleasing to the careful ear and lyrics conscious mind.

We all know the skill Skiba brings to the table but I had never heard of Steinbrick, beauce of that i was a little hesitant. The combination works, with Skiba's wavering voice and Steinbeck's lush chords the combination is slightly unsettling but delightfully deep.

This combination is a step away from Skiba's band and may be an affront to the harder punk fans in his fallowing. But if you are into music like Park, Cursive and Damien Rice I think you will really enjoy this stuff. Plus they are still on Epitaph so you know they have some rock sensibility.

"Patten Pending"- Their new and only album

Ill get you a good post after dinner. Sorry everyone, I put some stuff up at 1000cleverlines if you want that, it's Jim Gaffigan, UnderOath and Patton Oswaltt. Go get it, and ill give you a right good post in about 2 hours.

Good causes, great times

Guitar Hero 2 has started a great new charity which has different rock artist, celebrities and companies come up with unique and interesting controllers for the game. Rock, Paint, Bid is a new charity and all the money will be given to MusiCares which is a charity set up by the recording industry for those in need.

People participating include: Armor for sleep, Dashboard Confessional, Tenacious D, Jack's Mannequin, Hot Hot Heat, Paul Frank, Spill Canvas, Quicksilver, Tony Hawk, My Chemical Romance, Meg and Dia, The Rocket Summer and many more.

The guitars range from this truly unique one from the Hot Hot Heat, to ones baering the name and a signature of the band. I think it's the variety that really makes this thing work. My personal fav. right now is this Paul Frank but the Armor for Sleep one is pretty sick as well.

Great idea, great cause and more artist to come. Go make a bid or something.

Sea Wolf

Sea Wolf is the side band for Alex Church of the now famous band Irving. For those of you not in the know, Irving is a rare band that shares writing duties amongst all of the members equally, and with it front man duties as well. Each one has their own voice and style and each one has their own tracks. Alex Church plays bass for this band, but now he is stepping out on his own with Sea Wolf.

I guess im floating did a spot on him long ago before we were even aware he existed outside of Irving. Heading back there for this post, I confirmed my suspicions that long time Modest Mouse and Shins Producer Phil Ek was involved. That explains the great sound and body that both songs i have heard posses. He sounds almost like the best cross of Bright Eyes and Modest Mouse possible, and I can not get enough of it. To make him even more appealing, he is going on tour with The Silver Sun Pickups and is apparently good friends with them...how the hell can you not love this guy?

Because you are diffrent...and everyone else is boring

I feel in love the the Science of Sleep almost as soon as I watched it. I was looking forward to it a lot and it did not disappointed. If you haven't seen it do so...

One of my favorite parts of the film was the sound track which was beautifully done and really added to the film. When I got it I was even more delighted by the fact that the songs are mixed in with words from the movie its self. As it stands, its an airy soundtrack that is fun to listen to in the background of any gathering.

Even if you are not a big sound track fan I would highly recommend getting this thing.

Thursdays are for Finding old Friends

Many of you may be familiar with the band Goldfinger from their ever popular "99 Red balloons," but what you may not know is that front man John Feldmann is a talented producer who was worked with The Used, Story of the Year and even Good Charlotte.....I guess The Used are the only good ones.....anyways...

Goldfinger was an interesting mix of ska punk and was quite popular for some time. If there is one thing we can say about them, it's that they never put out a 1/2 ass album. They were not as catchy as blink or as interesting as Green Day but they built them selves a niche in the world and developed a cult fallowing.

If you like the Voodoo Glow Skulls and Blink 182 you will probably dig this. If you liked those bands 10 years ago...you probably already have it.

Pray for Kate

Fallen Stars Forgotten was supposed to be the big news of the Denver scene. They formed right as bands like Thursday and Taking Back Sunday were signing huge contracts for sophomore albums, and for a while it looked like they may be picked up. What ended up happening was a band implosion, leaving us with an under developed album(Pray for Kate) and memories of a band that sounded like Cursive and Thursday's love child.

The band played their last show in December and just flat gave away this album as a last good bye. While it is admittedly rough, I feel like these guys set the roots for other denver bands like Fear Before The March of Flames to bust out of a location that is not a traditional breeding ground for scremo.
Enjoy some local flavor

This never gets old

Or fearless leader called the dems out today . I don't know what his logic is but surprise surprise he is without fault. I don't know how he can blame the lack of funds on congress when he is the one who sent more troops against the public's will to an unpopular war.

If he wanted all this funding he should have asked for it before he sent those troops over there, instead of acting shocked and pointing fingers when the dems asked questions and took their time. Honestly he thinks he has a dictatorship, did he go to school at anytime?

Im pretty sure he is going to have to blink first on this one though, if the dems give him a budget of any sort the blame is out of their hands. A veto after that kind of goes against his professed bipartisan-ism at all costs.

I love that it can never be his fault, and that the republicans are flailing around for things the dems are doing wrong. I especially love the part about congress going on break. For some reason its ok for him to take more vacation days then any other president ever, but when congress takes a week break they are "leaving when there is work to be done."

I got The Almost's album today. I could have picked it up earlier from a web site but I restrained my self. It's pretty dam good if i do say so. Something like UnderOath gone main stream pop, it also features guest work from the former lead singer of Sunny Day Real Estate, if you haven't listened yet head out and get that. The album is also a historic occasion because it is the first time Tooth and Nail Records has worked with a major Label (Virgin) to put the album out. Could be the first step in a big move for them.

Gym Class Heroes old school

This ain't a song for the kids like our last album

I first heard about Gym Class from a friend who saw them open up for Fall Out Boy about 2 years ago. That was long before their new album "As Cruel as School Children" hit...in fact their album "The Paper Cut Chronicles" was just starting to get big and the band was quietly changing the way kids thought about hip hop.

When I finally saw them at warped tour for the first time I was struck by their friendliness and enthusiasm for the music. Travis, the bands lead singer, was all motion all the time and the band seemed genuinly suprised at the small gathering that fallowed them over. As a special bonus Patrick Stump came and sang with them for one song, which was quite cool. The best part of the day was hanging out with them at their tent and taking pictures and having them signing things, they were happy to stay there till the last fan went home. Over the next few times I saw them the shows were getting bigger and the band was getting more talented. The culmination of this rise was hearing them on the local Clear Channel radio station today.

Here at Karma spares no one we like to keep people informed about what bands did in the past as well as their upcoming projects. In the spirit of this promise I give you....

SELECT SONGS FROM BERNIE ALLEN AND OTHER PREVIOUS INCARNATIONS OF THE WORLD FAMOUS DECAYDANCE DARLINGS GYM CLASS HEROES!

Bernie Allen was the first version of Gym Class, It features far more rapping and less harmonization then the casual fan is familiar with and is quite a bit harsher. Its interesting to see how Travis evolved as an MC from a guy who definitely had fire to a guy who learned how to turn a phrase with a cute wink for the girls.
Eighty-Five.mp3 (More free ones at their myspace)

For the Kids was a self produced album from Gym Class and it features a pretty different lineup from what you can see today. In fact many of the songs off the album have a rough feel to it, but you can start to see how this band might develop if they had a budget and some time. For now its an "interesting" effort and a landmark in the bands history.
The Midnight Society is, guitarist, Disashi's side project where he did all the music and singing on his own. The EP was sold for 3 bucks at shows but soon the demand became to high and he realized he may have something on his hands. While there are no plans right now, I would imagine a release on Decaydance will happen soon. He still has the gym class sound, but its an all together different take.
